Moist Cigars
Today I want to emphasize the importance of keeping your cigars moist. You pay a good price for your premium cigars, so keeping them at the right humidity is essential for that great taste months after your purchase.
- First you need to strive for the correct humidity and temperature. I use the formula 70-72 % humidity and attempt to keep the temperature around 70ยบ F. Try not to open the humidor lid too often which allows the moisture to escape. Newer humidor models offer a glass lid to allow you to check the temperature and humidity without disturbing the atmosphere. Also, remove the cigars from their wrapper to allow moisture into the cigars.
- If you are using a humidor for the first time, be sure to prepare it before you place those premium cigars inside for safe keeping. Begin by sponging down all the wood, including the edges of your humidor with distilled water. If the wood is not penetrated with distilled water, the moisture in the cigars will be absorbed into the wood. The purpose of using distilled water instead of tap water is to prevent mold from forming on the lining and corners of your humidor.
- Check your humidor periodically for the humidity and temperature and rotate the cigars occasionally to ensure moisture is absorbed evenly.
