Moist Cigars

Today I want to emphasize the importance of keeping your cigars moist. You pay a good price for your premium cigars, so keeping them at the right humidity is essential for that great taste months after your purchase.

First you need to strive for the correct humidity and temperature. I use the formula 70-72 % humidity and attempt to keep the temperature around 70º F. Try not to open the humidor lid too often which allows the moisture to escape. Newer humidor models offer a glass lid to allow you to check the temperature and humidity without disturbing the atmosphere. Also, remove the cigars from their wrapper to allow moisture into the cigars.
If you are using a humidor for the first time, be sure to prepare it before you place those premium cigars inside for safe keeping. Begin by sponging down all the wood, including the edges of your humidor with distilled water. If the wood is not penetrated with distilled water, the moisture in the cigars will be absorbed into the wood. The purpose of using distilled water instead of tap water is to prevent mold from forming on the lining and corners of your humidor.
Check your humidor periodically for the humidity and temperature and rotate the cigars occasionally to ensure moisture is absorbed evenly.

Pops's Cigars Advice on Butane Lighters

Butane lighters work best when:

Keep your lighter at room temperature. When you need to refill your lighter, very CAREFULLY depressurize your lighter by depressing the fill nozzle on the bottom of the lighter. You must drop the pressure in the lighter so the butane will transfer from the can to the lighter. When the lighter is full you will need to wait about five minutes before you attempt to light it. You may reduce the time needed by warming up your filled lighter by holding it tightly in your hands. Accomplish this by warming the filled lighter in your hands).
Don’t leave your light in your car in the winter or outdoors – When Butane is left outdoors at a temperature below 45 degrees the butane will stay in a liquid state and will not light. For butane to burn it has to be in a vapor or gas state. Also, the bladder that holds the butane may burst.
When refilling the lighter always expunge the existing gases from the lighter before adding butane. This can be accomplished by pressing a small screwdriver on the valve until you no longer hear the gas exiting the valve.
